Reuniting Former NCIS Cast for Ducky Tribute Poses Shocking Challenges Beyond Expectation!

While TVLine has made a compelling argument for the potential return of various cast members for a hypothetical homage to the late David McCallum on NCIS, practical constraints and the need for coherent storytelling might limit the guest list.

As CBS’ NCIS heads into its 21st season in February 2024, there are no original cast members left, given the technicality that Sean Murray and Brian Dietzen became series regulars in Seasons 2 and 10, respectively. This scarcity of colleagues who truly worked alongside McCallum’s Dr. Donald Mallard for a significant part of the series raises questions about who should be invited for a fitting send-off.

While fans may clamor for Mark Harmon’s return as Gibbs and Michael Weatherly’s DiNozzo, or hope for a #Tiva reunion with Cote de Pablo, the logistical challenges and the necessity of dedicating screen time to their characters’ updates pose significant hurdles. Harmon’s availability and the need for a meaningful catch-up with Gibbs in Alaska could divert attention from the intended tribute to McCallum.

Similarly, Weatherly and de Pablo, who haven’t shared a scene in over a decade, might require substantial storytelling to update viewers on the status of their atypical family unit, potentially overshadowing the primary focus on Ducky.

Moreover, Emily Wickersham’s return could spark questions about Bishop’s abrupt departure and her relationship with Nick. Balancing multiple character updates might dilute the impact of a tribute to McCallum.

The challenge lies in deciding whether to prioritize the central tribute to McCallum and Ducky or risk turning the episode into a series of catch-up conversations with returning characters. One potential compromise could involve incorporating a “Case of the Week” that pays homage to McCallum’s character, with Dr. Palmer mourning his recent death. Ducky’s wisdom, provided over the years, could guide Palmer in solving the case, leading to a proper memorial for his mentor.

This approach allows for a respectful tribute to McCallum while acknowledging the constraints of bringing back multiple characters for extended storylines. Ultimately, the goal should be to strike a balance between honoring the past and advancing the narrative.
