NCIS Star Mark Harmon Confirms Whether He’s Retiring After Gibbs Exit.

For nearly two decades, “NCIS” fans could rely on Mark Harmon’s consistent presence as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Harmon bid farewell to the procedural drama in Season 19. Despite his departure, he entrusted the remaining cast members with the reins to carry on the venerable CBS program. Harmon, however, isn’t taking it easy in his absence.

Although he’s no longer in front of the camera, Harmon remains connected to “NCIS” in a different capacity — as an executive producer for Season 20. Emphasizing that he didn’t retire but rather left the show, he expressed his ongoing commitment to the series. Harmon’s departure has also opened up new avenues for him, including the pursuit of a passion project. He is collaborating on the creation of “Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, a Japanese American Spy Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor,” a historical nonfiction book tailored for a general readership.

Co-authored with Leon Carroll Jr., a former NCIS special agent with two decades of experience, the book delves into the intriguing narrative surrounding Pearl Harbor. Despite venturing into this new project, Harmon is drawing on the time and experience he invested in “NCIS” to shape his next endeavor. Reflecting on his approach, he stated, “I’ve always thought you can learn from history. Things tend to repeat themselves.” Harmon’s ongoing involvement in the world of “NCIS” and his foray into historical storytelling showcase his versatile and engaged post-acting pursuits.

Mark Harmon, at 72, defies expectations by maintaining his passion and storytelling drive after leaving the success of “NCIS.” Despite the show’s consistent work, he reflects on feeling tired due to its demanding schedule. Harmon cherishes the camaraderie but emphasizes that it’s a job. Former coworkers praise him, but now he values spending time with family and enjoying the freedom to do what he wants. Harmon’s focus on his new book, “Ghosts of Honolulu,” highlights his post-“NCIS” pursuits, leaving the future open for possibilities. The book is set to release on November 14.
