NCIS Show’s Existence Was in Jeopardy Due to the Hiring of This Actor

The show’s creators had a strong desire to bring this actor on board, and he ultimately became a 20-season star of the series. That actor was none other than David McCallum.

As NCIS fans eagerly anticipate season 21, they’ll notice the absence of one of the show’s most pivotal characters. Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, portrayed by David McCallum, remained with the show for 20 seasons, outlasting Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Before McCallum was cast in the series, there were significant concerns and disputes among the crew. Here’s what a series director had to say about the potential of discontinuing NCIS because of McCallum.

NCIS fans can’t imagine the show without David McCallum as Ducky Mallard. However, his casting caused significant debate at the series’ outset.

According to former NCIS director James Whitmore Jr., when David McCallum was chosen for the role of Ducky, the studio initially resisted, calling him an “old character actor.” Producer Don Bellisario, however, threatened to cancel NCIS if McCallum wasn’t cast, and the studio eventually relented, recognizing McCallum’s value.

Former CBS casting director Peter Golden believed that the debate over McCallum’s casting might have been due to his British nationality. Nevertheless, McCallum’s audition, along with those of Pauley Perrette and Michael Weatherly, made him the undeniable ideal choice for the role.

David McCallum, famous for his role as Ducky on NCIS, shared how he landed the part. He received a phone call asking him to visit casting director and film producer Bonnie Timmermann’s office to tape an audition for a show called NCIS. After an unusual office audition where he requested the camera angle be slanted toward the floor to simulate him examining a deceased body, McCallum got a call to fly to Los Angeles for the role of Ducky.

After a few more auditions, McCallum met Don Bellisario. McCallum recalled, “Afterward, Don came out and put his arm around me, because he’s a great deal bigger than I am, and said, ‘David…’ and I realized I might have the charm.” While fixing a flat tire on his rental car in Los Angeles, he received a phone call and was hired for the role.

“And I said, well, then, I’m gonna go get a car that works,” McCallum laughed.
