NCIS’ Creators Considered a Lot of A-list Actor to Play Gibbs.

Mark Harmon’s portrayal of Larry Jethro Gibbs on NCIS is iconic, but it wasn’t always a given that he would land the role. Season 21 news is highly anticipated by NCIS fans eager to learn when their beloved show will return. Sadly, it’s unlikely that Mark Harmon will make an appearance before retiring, having played Gibbs for 19 seasons.

Interestingly, the creators of NCIS initially considered several A-list actors for the part of Gibbs before ultimately choosing Mark Harmon. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson shed light on the casting challenges the show faced. Johnson mentioned that names like Harrison Ford were tossed around as possibilities for Gibbs because they seemed perfect for the role, even though it didn’t progress beyond initial discussions. Back then, actors like Harrison Ford didn’t typically engage in television roles, according to Peter Golden, the former head of casting for CBS.

However, in the early casting discussions, no option was ruled out. Casting director Susan Bluestein revealed she had researched numerous well-known actors like Charlie Sheen, Andrew McCarthy, Alec Baldwin, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Kevin Bacon, Tom Binger, Val Kilmer, and Patrick Swayze. Scott Glenn also received serious consideration for the part of Ducky, though he declined.

Susan Bluestein continued, expressing that Mark Harmon was always on her list from the start due to his strong on-screen presence. The creators of NCIS were determined to cast the right star for the show, and Mark Harmon eventually stood out.

So, how did Mark Harmon secure the role? Donald P. Bellisario, the producer, noticed Harmon while watching him on The West Wing. In 2003, Bellisario cast Harmon as Larry Jethro Gibbs on JAG, and later that year, Harmon joined NCIS. Five years later, Harmon not only portrayed Gibbs but also became a producer on NCIS and an executive producer on NCIS: New Orleans.

Mark Harmon’s casting wasn’t without some initial doubts from Bellisario about his suitability for the role, but Susan Bluestein, among others, advocated for him. Eventually, Bellisario and Harmon’s rapport solidified, leading to Mark Harmon taking on the iconic role, making it impossible to envision anyone else as Larry Jethro Gibbs on NCIS.
